Wake up and smell the toxins (Before the Flood)

For the first day of class, we watched a film called Before the Flood. This film captures Leonardo DiCaprio meeting with world leaders and scientists to discuss the dangers of climate change and the find possible solutions.

Everyday, without a major change, we are destroying our motherland for future generations. Earth’s atmosphere is continually being diminished from our over use of fossil fuels and because of this our children will not experience this beautiful planet like us and many past generations have. The breathtaking glaciers in the Arctic are melting away, Greenland’s white coating is turning brown, and the air in China is fogging. Collectively, the UN had come to an agreement that there needs to be alterations to our way of life. The use of fossil fuels needs to be lowered. Many countries have already begun the process of converting to alternative resources like Sweden and China which is great, but other countries do not have the financial stability to switch or, like The United States, more than half of our government officials are denying the fact that there is an issue. This is a scary thought because they are supposed to be some of our most educated and powerful people that chose how our country functions. There is clear and obvious evidence that the issue of climate change is real, but people are still ignoring the facts that are right in front of them. The government has not changed it’s stand point because the people have not come to the conclusion just yet that we need change in our life style due to under education of the issue. The people have a huge say in what the government decides to approve and disapprove, so a solution to the problem in the United States is the education to civilians for them to up rise. Without this education, the US will continue with our intoxicating lifestyles that damage the Earth.

Tanglewood Nature Preserve (4/27/17)

Our first class field trip was to Tangle-Wood Nature Preserve. Here, our professor had us go on a scavenger hunt to explore and focus on different parts of nature that we normally wouldn't pay attention to. My group started off inside capturing images of various animals that were held in cages. After viewing the indoor sights, we ventured outdoors to the nature trail. The ground was very muddy, but that didn't stop our determination to find all of the tasks on the list provided by our professor. My group made it over the first extremely muddy section of the trail to get to a semi dry portion, but as the trail went on, the path got even more wet. Lets just say that my favorite pair of white shoes are now brown. Once we went a little further we came to a down hill section of the trail which we thought we could make it down because our determination was just so high, but our hopes of finishing the trail was officially over when one of my group members slipped in the mud. Even thou...

Turtle Leaf Cafe

On Monday of this week, a couple of my friends and I went to a local organic cafe called Turtle Leaf Cafe. Here there are many different delicious options. They serve breakfast and lunch, but do not serve dinner as they close at 3pm on most days. This place is one of my favorite around town because it is local foods and not a chain restaurant. Turtle leaf reminds me a lot of the local diners in my home state of Maine. While ordering, there are so many options that sounds amazing that it makes it hard to decide to pick. My go to options for lunch is a pineapple mango spinach smoothie with a strawberry turkey brie panini or a strawberry almond salad. For breakfast my favorite is getting two eggs over easy with wheat toast and a pineapple mango spinach smoothie. Since we went early enough for the breakfast menu I ordered my regular breakfast. I can never go wrong with this option. My friend Tiia also got the same meal as me. Gyll on the other hand ordered a breakfast sandwich with the...

Tree Hugging

This weeks trip, our class ventured to the woods to embrace the trees. For this task we had to be blindfolded while a partner guided you around to hug a tree. Once you really got to know your tree, your partner would guide you back to the common meeting point where we all started. After being back at the starting point, you had to search for the tree that you hugged. For my group, I had two partners due to the uneven number of people in class that day. Luckily they were my very close friends, so we made this assignment fun. First, I was guiding one of my friend, Gyll, to find the perfect tree for her. Of course my other friend, Tiia, who was also helping guide found the hardest path to follow. We managed to guide Gyll, keep in mind that she was blind folded, down a fairly steep hill, across a stream with out getting wet, find a tree, and get her back to the starting point with out her falling. To me it seems like that takes some skill. When it was my turn to be guided, my two ...
