Farmers' Market

Today, 5/21/17, I took another trip to Ithaca to visit the Farmers' Market. This place is adorable. Here there were many local farmers, artists, and entrepreneurs behind stands selling their own goods. Walking around looking at all the homemade goods was very cool. There was homemade ice creams, sauces, and even quilts and necklaces. I did not end up buying anything, but the real reason for the venture to the market was to talk to local organic farmers. There were three stand that really caught my eye and I was able to talk to very interesting people.

The first people we asked to speak to were two guys. They farm locally on Senaca Lake. Their farm is called Six Circles Farm. They said they started farming with their friends and created a business out of it. Their main products grown is garlics. They make different spices that are named after their grandmother because she loved garlic. They told me that their grandmother owned a hotel and was speaking to many different people a day so she felt like she couldn't eat garlic during the day since it gives bad breath. So instead of eating it during the day she would have late night garlic snacks. I thought this story was cute.

The next stand I went to was to the Blue Heron Farm located on the Senaca Lake. The lady at the farm told me she also grows a lot of garlics along with various other vegetables. The first thing I noticed about this woman was her beautiful accent, so I asked her where she was from and she said she is originally from Germany which is really cool. She also began to tell used to farm somewhere in Pennsylvania until last year when she bought out the land in New York. She told me that the land is more moist here and that the weather is different as well.

The third and final farmer I spoke with was a lady that was very close to Ithaca. Her farm is called Gardens of Earthly Mirth. She had a unique way of farming. She farms using horses and not modern day machinery. She believes in using completely natural materials literally to the 'T'. The picture to the right is photographs of the way she farms. She told me her main crop is garlic. This lady was very nice and I appreciated her time.

After speaking with a few people I decided to walk around. If you walk through the whole farmers' market to the back you can find a cute dock to sit on and enjoy the day.
